A Volunteer’s Story — Judy Gilham

Judy Gilham, Director of the Lowell Food Pantry and Harvest of Hope Board Member, started working at the food pantry more than 15 years ago. She had just returned to her home town after her husband retired from the Air Force, and she wanted to help others and to give back to her community. She and her friend Marlene Green were co-directors of the Lowell Pantry for several years before Judy took on that responsibility by herself.

Today, Judy works 20 to 30 hours per month staffing the food pantry, ordering food from the Logan food bank, purchasing food with cash donations, and completing all of the paperwork necessary to run a food pantry. The Lowell Pantry is open the first, second and fourth Wednesdays of each month and serves about 100 clients.

Judy has served on the Harvest of Hope Board for two terms and she is also one of the organization’s truck drivers. She believes in the mission of Harvest of Hope and sees first-hand how it makes a difference in Lowell. In particular, the meat that HOH delivers each month provides an important source of protein for her clients and the fresh vegetables in the summer months add variety and healthy options.
